Here is a space where Aadeez from all over the world can come together and celebrate their festivals and national holidays whatever their background- from Ramadan to Eid, to Navratras and Diwali! Special occasions happen all year round and here is your opportunity to teach your fellow Aadeez about your culture, traditions and how you celebrate!

Use this topic to wish each other, to post reviews of your celebrations, to post photos, and to ask each other questions about the holiday or tradition to understand it better.

I firmly believe understanding each other's traditions, cultures and ways of life creates the basis for life-long friendship between communities. So, as we prepare for food, fun, new clothes, fireworks, gifts and festivities let this be a place where we share what our festivals mean, how we celebrate and have a little fun together

Much love and best wishes for all the upcoming festivals to all

Happy to see this topic on the forums.. Aadeez family is such a diverse family that we get to know abt the diff cultures n festivals..Happy Navratri to all those celebrating it.. It is the amazing festival of 9 days.. 9 nights rather, that is why its called 'Navratri' (Nav = 9, ratri = night). It is celebrated with 'garba' n 'raas' for Goddess, which is the traditional dance.. 9 nights of fun, celebrations n traditional dance.. The 10th day of this festival is marked as death of evil n ppl celebrate it as win of good over evil.. This festival is also celebrated as 'Durga Puja' in some parts of the country. However, i dont know much in detail, how it is exactly celebrated..For me, this festival is all about 'garba' getting ready in the traditional dress n dancing all night! Its so nice to know that diff festivals in our cultures occur at the same time.. Celebration time for all of us.. Eid Mubarak to all the Muslim frns.. When is Eid btw? I wud love to know all abt this festival..
Mera to jo bhi hai,
Tu hi tha, tu hi hai,
Baaki jahaan hai begaana...

Aadeez, I totally agree that we should share our experiences here :)

Eid al Adha is different to Eid al Fitr which is connected to Ramadan. Eid al Adha is comes at the end of the Hajj pilgrimage at the two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah in Saudi Arabia and has been declared today for the 27th October. Mubarak to everyone!

One of the most important features of Eid al Adha is the qurbani (sacrifice) of an animal like a sheep, goat or camel in remembrance of the sacrifice that our prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) (Abraham) was asked to make by Allah as a test of his faith. Now, at the time, Allah asked for the sacrifice of Ibrahim's (peace be upon him) SON, Ismail. Ibrahim (pbuh) explained to his son that the Lord has asked him to sacrifice him and his son understood what was required. Before, they could follow through on the sacrifice, Allah intervened and said that the test had been fulfilled and that Ibrahim could sacrifice a ram instead of his son.

It is important to note that the sacrifice is not related to cleansing ones sins but is a symbol of how Muslims are committed to Allah no matter what He may ask of them. The meat from the sacrifice should also be shared with the poor.

Allah tells us in the Holy Quran that Ibrahim (pbuh) was neither a Muslim, Christian or Jew- he was simply a monotheist. He used to pray to a single God way before any of the monoethestic scriptures were revealed. Muslims believe that Ibrahim (pbuh) and his son re-built the Ka'ba (House of God in Divya's photo above) and that a lot of the customs of Hajj are related to the journey that Ibrahim (pbuh) and his family went through.

You may notice that we share this story with Christians and Jews who also accept Ibrahim (pbuh) and the story of his sacrifice.

Usually most people celebrate Eid beginning with communal prayer and listening to the imam's sermon (khutba) at the end of the prayer. We try to dress up in new clothes and then do the usual stuff with family. Hmm... Eidhi... this curse! HAHA! I am the eldest in my family and always give my younger brother and two sisters eidhi! I used to give it in cash but now I try to buy gifts...it's nicer to have something to open right?!

Navratri in Bengal is celebrated as Durga Puja..
mythology behind this is::
a devil named Mahisasur came on kailash(where God SHIVA resides) n attacked ....he couldn't be defeat by any God as he was already blessed by GOD SHIVA himself...by the power of all GOds DEVI DUGA is created...SHe defeat Mahishasur on the dawn of "MAHALAYA"...N frm the next day of MAHALAYA DEVIPAKHSHA (DEVI=Goddess,Pakhsha=period)
 started,counting by Prathama,ditia like this...

..On sasthi DEVIBODHAN(DURGA ma is welcomed by us on earth)...

saptami--puja
ASTAMI--itz a special day...on morning we all keep fast n give ANJALI(pray to GODDESS for love,n happiness).that time every GIRL's out here in KOLKATA wears SAREE n BOY's wears PAJAMA n PANJABI...at evening...we hav sandhipuja,n dhunuchi nach....

nabami--puja..

DASAMI----MA er vasan..SINDUR KHELA...(married women play wd SINDUR on vasan time...if u guys hav watched KAHANI(mv),there is SINDUR khela).....that day we wish each n every 1 SUBHA BIJOYA,even to our enemies,n we wish to end all the bad thngs  n start a new begning..on that day again DURGA ma went to KAILASH ,after spending time  wd us.

to me DURGA puja is hangout with all my dear skl frds, have lotz of fun, wearing SAREE on astami, lotz of new dressess, going to restraunts, going to malls, watchng mvs, goings to pandals, having FUCHKA(panipuri),sending time wd famly,no clg n i can do wtever i want...n at last SUBHA BIJOYA,"ASCHE BACHAR ABAR HABE"(next year it will happen again)..
